Garden of the Tigers: Springtime in Lewes

All photographs are memento mori. To take a photograph is to participate in another person's or thing's mortality, vulnerability, mutability. Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs testify to time's relentless melt.” - Susan Sontag

There's a magic beauty during springtime in coastal Delaware. Of course the warming weather starts to spark dreams of lazy days on the beach listening to the surf and reading a good book. But the beach towns at the Delaware shore are more than just suntans, sand, and soft serve. Do you smell the perfume in the air as you stroll the sidewalks, especially in Bethany Beach and Lewes? That's the sweet floral smell of lower Delaware in spring!

Best known for the vibrant tulip gardens in both its community and private gardens, Lewes is the coastal town probably most associated with kaleidoscopic blooming triumph. Even the Savannah Road bascule bridge over the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal is bedecked in gorgeous baskets overflowing with a riot of flowers in every imaginable color, pattern, and texture. But I personally love peeking over private fences during a stroll and seeing what floriferous joy hides behind. Enjoy the shallow field of focus from a wide open aperture in this week's image as it leads your eye into the scene. As I wrote in my post on April 17, 2021...

Well, in case you didn’t know, the people of the First Town in the First State are very enthusiastic about their flowers! Started by just seven caring people, Lewes in Bloom is a local organization dedicated to preserving and beautifying Historic Lewes and the greater community. Well known since their founding in 2002 for their gorgeous flower gardens and annual spring plant sale, Lewes in Bloom has won America in Bloom’s contest four times and has placed in the Circle of Champions twice, most recently in 2015.

Beyond Lewes in Bloom, of course, are the many beautiful private flower pots, beds, and gardens around the city. At one place, you might find delightfully exuberant waves of petunias hanging from baskets on a grand front porch. Around another corner could be fragrant azaleas or bountiful hydrangeas framing a welcome doorway. In ‘Garden of the Tigers,’ we see a glorious display of bright orange tiger lilies guarding the grounds of a beautiful house along Kings Highway. Despite their fiery large blooms which last only a few days by the way, Lilium lancifolium have no scent. So they’re literally a feast for the eyes!

I hope you’re enjoying springtime wherever you are and that there are flowers nearby. If you do get to visit Lewes, or even better are blessed to live thereabouts, you are in for a real treat.
